Gemology: Jewellery with a Timeless Tradition

The historical background and significance of gemstones are as ancient and deep-rooted as our ancient Indian culture itself. Since time immemorial people have known the importance of gemstones and their impact on human lives. The importance of gemstones and the science of gemology have also been mentioned in the ancient Hindu texts, the ‘Vedas’. In India, the relationship between Vedic Astrology and gemstones is very close. It is believed that spiritual rituals mentioned in ancient sacred manuscripts and texts have incorporated gemstones to restore the balance of the energy fields and to restore peace of mind.

This is done to strengthen family ties and enhance the feeling of love, trust and security in a relationship. One of the most significant attributes of gemstones is that they can combat the evil effects of negative cosmic influence. Another important aspect of gemstones is that people have been fascinated and allured by the sparkle of gemstones since ancient times. Gemstones have played a significant part in the design of any jewellery set since time immemorial.

Let’s now see what are the most important factors that combine to give a gemstone its unique abilities to benefit mankind.

Colour of Gemstone:

This is considered the most important aspect of a gemstone as it is the colour only that determines the purity of a gemstone. For instance, the quality of a Ruby gemstone is determined by its pure vibrant red, or slightly pinkish-red in colour. This makes it one of the most expensive gemstones in the market.

Clarity of Gemstone:

This is another important aspect of a gemstone. The authenticity of a gemstone is determined by the number of inclusions the gemstone has. However, it is also pointed out that these inclusions can reduce the transparency or brightness of gemstones. However, it is also pointed out that these inclusions can reduce the transparency or brightness of gemstones thus drastically reducing their value. Nonetheless, it is still believed that a gemstone’s purity can only be determined by mineral inclusions called needles. Needles can be short or long and slender and they might appear to be woven together in intersecting groups called ‘silk’. Having said that, needles can also contribute positively to a gemstone’s appearance. The presence of silk in a gemstone can scatter light across facets that otherwise might have looked dark. This can add softness to the colour and spread it more evenly across the gemstone. Intersecting needles can also cause the star effect, called ‘asterism’.

Cut in a Gemstone:

According to gemologists, it is the cut of a gemstone that determines its ability to fit into a particular jewellery set or an item. The most common shapes of gemstones that are found in jewellery sets are ovals and cushions, along with brilliantly cut crowns of kite-shaped and triangular facets. There are also shapes found in step–cut pavilions with concentric rows of rectangular or square facets.
