Amethyst (Katela)

Amethyst, also known as Katela, is a purple variety of quartz that is prized for its striking beauty and spiritual significance. The name “amethyst” comes from the Greek word “amethystos,” which means “not intoxicated.” According to ancient Greek mythology, the god of wine, Dionysus, became angry with a mortal and vowed to unleash his tigers on the next person he encountered. The maiden Amethyst was on her way to worship the goddess Diana when she encountered Dionysus. As the tigers approached, Amethyst cried out to Diana for help and was turned into a statue of pure, clear quartz. Dionysus, realizing the error of his ways, poured wine over the statue, which stained the quartz purple and created the first amethyst. Today, amethyst is valued not only for its beauty but also for its purported healing properties. It is said to promote calmness and clarity of mind, soothe anxiety, and enhance intuition and spiritual awareness. Amethyst is a popular gemstone used in jewelry, decor, and spiritual practices around the world.
